The monumental canvas \u003cstrong\u003edepicts the first Mass celebrated on April 26, 1500\u003c\/strong\u003e, only days after the Portuguese fleet led by \u003cstrong\u003ePedro Alvares Cabral\u003c\/strong\u003e arrived on the shores of the land that was first named Terra de Santa Cruz (Land of the Holy Cross), before later becoming known as Brazil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCabral sailed under the authority of the Portuguese Crown, whose maritime explorations were \u003cstrong\u003eclosely connected with the spiritual heritage of the Order of Christ, the successor of the Knights Templar in Portugal\u003c\/strong\u003e. For this reason, priests accompanied many of these expeditions. Their mission was not only to minister to the sailors, but also to bring the Christian faith to newly encountered lands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDrawing inspiration from the famous letter of the fleet’s chronicler, \u003cstrong\u003ePero Vaz de Caminha\u003c\/strong\u003e, Meirelles carefully reconstructed the historic moment when the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered for the first time on this new land. The scene unfolds beneath the open sky.
