Vasari had been commissioned to produce a grand cycle that included the four Evangelists and the Coronation of the Virgin. After the chapel complex was dismantled in the eighteenth century, the paintings were dispersed. The panel of Saint Mark eventually entered private collections before being gifted to the National Gallery of Art in 2012.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, Vasari presents Saint Mark with his \u003cstrong\u003ewinged lion, the symbol of courage and royal dignity\u003c\/strong\u003e.
