  • Title: The First Mass in Brazil
    Artist: Victor Meirelles
    Date: 1860
Collection: Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Victor Meirelles, one of the great masters of nineteenth century Brazilian painting, created The First Mass in Brazil between 1858 and 1860 after years of careful preparation and historical research. The monumental canvas depicts the first Mass celebrated on April 26, 1500, only days after the Portuguese fleet led by Pedro Alvares Cabral arrived on the shores of the land that was first named Terra de Santa Cruz (Land of the Holy Cross), before later becoming known as Brazil.

Cabral sailed under the authority of the Portuguese Crown, whose maritime explorations were closely connected with the spiritual heritage of the Order of Christ, the successor of the Knights Templar in Portugal. For this reason, priests accompanied many of these expeditions. Their mission was not only to minister to the sailors, but also to bring the Christian faith to newly encountered lands.

Drawing inspiration from the famous letter of the fleet’s chronicler, Pero Vaz de Caminha, Meirelles carefully reconstructed the historic moment when the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered for the first time on this new land. The scene unfolds beneath the open sky. A simple altar stands at the centre as Friar Henrique de Coimbra celebrates the liturgy, surrounded by Portuguese sailors, missionaries, and Indigenous people who observe the sacred moment with curiosity and reverence.
