Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and later under Jacques-Louis David in Paris, he absorbed the clarity and classical ideals of French Neoclassicism. After further study in Rome, he became court painter to the Dutch monarchy and produced large religious compositions and refined portraits.
