  • Title: The Lamentation over the Dead Christ
    Artist: Sandro Botticelli
    Date: 1495-1500
Collection: Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan, Italy

Painted during the final years of his career, The Lamentation over the Dead Christ stands among the most powerful and emotionally charged works of the Florentine master Sandro Botticelli. Created between 1495 and 1500, the painting captures the solemn moment when the body of Christ is mourned before His burial.

At the centre of the composition, the lifeless body of Jesus rests across the knees of the Virgin Mary. Saint John the Evangelist gently supports her as she collapses beneath the weight of sorrow. Mary Magdalene kneels at Christ’s feet, embracing them in silent devotion, her eyes closed in mourning. Two other holy women accompany the scene, one supporting the Savior’s head while the other hides her face in despair within her mantle.

Behind the group stands Joseph of Arimathea, silhouetted against the dark opening of the tomb. He raises the crown of thorns and the nails of the Cross, reminders of the Passion that has just unfolded. Botticelli gathers the figures into a tightly knit circle of grief, their gestures intertwined and their expressions filled with profound emotion.

Originally created as an altarpiece for a small funerary altar in the Florentine church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the panel later disappeared from records before being acquired in 1879 by the Milanese collector Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, whose museum now preserves this remarkable work.
