    Defendente Ferrari’s Adoration of the Magi is a splendid early sixteenth century altarpiece rich in colour, detail, and symbolic meaning. Mary sits before an ornate red tapestry, as she presents the Christ Child to the visiting kings. At the foreground, two kings kneel, each offering their gifts in deep humility. The eldest bows closest to the Child, while the second kneels nearby in vibrant green and gold. The third king stands behind them, waiting his turn with reverence. Their richly patterned garments, jewelled turbans, and varied features symbolize the three continents of Asia, Europe, and Africa to which the Gospel would soon spread.
