    According to ancient Christian tradition, the parents of the Virgin Mary were Saints Anne and Joachim, whose long and faithful prayer was answered by God in preparation for the Incarnation.

    Saints Anne and Joachim, honoured as the patron saints of parents and grandparents, endured many years of childlessness while remaining steadfast in hope. Tradition recounts that each received an angelic message announcing that their prayer had been heard and that they would conceive a child destined for a unique role in God’s plan. In obedience and trust, they later consecrated Mary to the Lord, offering her wholly to His service.

    In this work, Luca Giordano presents a tender and harmonious vision of the Holy Family across generations. The Virgin Mary, youthful and serene, holds the Christ Child while Saints Anne and Joachim bow in reverence before their grandson, acknowledging the fulfilment of God’s promise within their family line. Saint Joseph, placed gently to one side, gathers fruit from an apple tree, a quiet symbol of providence and redemption. Cherubim hover among rose-tinted clouds, while one advances with freshly cut roses, evoking purity, love, and sacrificial grace.
